AWP panel The Thing Builders: Building Literary Communities that Matter

AWP S109. The Thing Builders: Building Literary Communities That Matter  Location Tampa, Florida, Grand Salon B, Marriott Waterside, Second Floor  Saturday, March 10, 2018 9:00 am to 10:15 am

Moderator: Penny Guisinger along with panelists JP Howard, Amanda Johnston, andJanna Marlies Maron

Building a literary thing takes more than money. It takes vision, determination, and faith that, somehow, it will be worth it. Conferences, courses, publications, and socio-political movements are opportunities for writers to find each other, share and improve skills, and create social change. As “thing-builders” who are supporting their own careers while supporting other writers, panelists will share how and why they do it in this time of almost limitless competition and scarce resources.

Reading Queer: Poetry in a Time of Chaos AWP off-site reading, Tampa, FL

JP Howard reading at this AWP off-site event at The Portico (1001 N Florida Ave, Tampa, FL) along with poets Bryan Borland, Cathleen Chambless, Ching-In Chen, Gregg Shapiro, Jan Becker, Jericho Brown, J.P. Howard, Ruben Quesada, Sam Sax, Samiya Bashir, Shane Allison, Valerie Wetlaufer, and more!

READING QUEER: POETRY IN A TIME OF CHAOS, an anthology edited by Neil de la Flor and Maureen Seaton, is a collection of the most subversive, gritty, moving, and courageous writing to come out of the U.S. queer community in recent political times. “When we started to solicit material for the anthology in 2015,” says Seaton & de la Flor, “we didn’t expect to compile a survival manual. Overnight, the work of these fifty poets became even more crucial. It became sacred.” READING QUEER: POETRY IN A TIME OF CHAOS brings the LGBTQI community together in the spirit and solidarity of poetry at its finest and fiercest. “It is our gift to all conscious citizens. With love.” (Seaton & de la Flor)
